Macro POV : the Era of Content Max

Current time: --:-- / Total time: --:--

Last week Netflix announced that it would release almost a movie a week in 2021.. about 70 movies. (In second was Disney with 22) !! Let that sink in ... just one platform launching 70 original movies in a year ( not to forget they'll release shows as well).

Now if you take a wider/Macro POV there are many things to infer from this... because for the longest time in the age of Tv & Cinema theatres we would talk about the individual movie and show titles, opening weekend box office returns...and analyse what would make a movie last long enough in theatres to break even. Suddenly, its a whole different ball game. It's all about volume now.

We log on to platforms and scroll through them for the volume of content they offer, we peep into some, we snack a little, we watch some and we binge some. But what is constant is the need to always have something to watch next! So the more a platform offers the more the chances of us sticking to their endless scroll loop.

What it has also bred is the revenge of the niche. Big ass movies have been the kings of the box office for ages, but on a platform.. while they might still lead one to log in ( or buy into the subscription) after that the niche players keep us there. It's almost like the main course inviting us in and the appetisers and desserts keeping us there till the next main course comes along. So niche is as important is a blockbuster.

Continuity was always a thing for series, we wanted to see what happened next. The streaming era extended that trend and made us binge season after season, but now we also want sequel after sequel... so if you can create a successful universe as a creator.. you might just be able to tell as many stories as you can within it as individual movies/or series and people will come back for more.. ( movie franchises aren't a new thing, but now they're blending into series more than ever )

and lastly, this is the time to be a creator but more importantly a multi-dimensional creator. Be a generalist, develop stuff across genres, platforms, mediums and mindsets. Explore every aspect of creative you can create, you have the opportunity and the tools available for free. Because a YouTuber or a podcaster are today's showrunners, filmmakers and creative all-stars. So if there was any time to dip your toes into as many ideas and create it's now...
