Say this to yourself :
“It’s ok if people don’t like me. “
Now say it five more times…
It feels weird, doesn’t it? Generating almost instant pushback from your mind. It’s nearly as if we’re all programmed to, trained, and motivated to get one thing, “ be liked”!
But if you sit back and think about it, if we only lived our lives based on what other people would understand, like, or approve of, where would what we truly want and who we really are come in?
It’s ingrained in us from the time we’re children that to be liked is to be accepted, loved, and valued. But the day you realise that the people we admire the most are those who don’t do what they do to be liked…. They do it because they believe they must. They listen to their voice and advice over anyone else’s. They’re valued because they’re gracefully and totally themselves… without delusions or apprehensions.
The people we admire the most take their own honest advice every day.
“It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own.” - Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
