1-1-1: Owning your Mistakes, 15% Rule, naming the Inner Monster
1-Thought-Starter
You can't erase your mistakes or pin your bad decisions on someone else. You have to own your own failures. You earn as much respect and goodwill by standing by someone in the wake of a failure as you do by giving them credit for a success.
- Robert Iger (The Ride of a Lifetime)
1-Insight
Building strong, healthy relationships that last is no easy feat. Oftentimes, for reasons unknown, you may find yourself in relationships that do not work out. Whether you’re someone who tends to overshare, or someone who struggles to open up, the “15% Rule” may help you approach your relationships in a more systematic way.
Fair warning: This is not a fool-proof formula but it may be a more objective way to view your relationships and figure out the issues.
1-Recommendation
What happens when your external and internal selves have very different needs? And you are being torn apart by both? It’s something that can destroy a person from inside out.
On this episode of Meditative Story, Meredith Arthur (author of Get Out Of My Head) shares her experiences from her life that taught her how to balance her internal and external worlds. Inside, she’s an anxious overthinker who is always in doubt. Externally, she’s a happy person who chooses to ignore those thoughts. But gradually, those painful thoughts manifest as physical pain.
The one thought that stayed with me – one of the important takeaways – is power in “naming our monsters”. The moment Meredith got her diagnosis, it took away the unease and unpredictability of her condition. Just as, the moment we identify our problems, in a way we take away the power they hold over us.
Instead of just ignoring what your body is telling you, maybe take some time today to listen to your inner monster. It might free you!
PS: I had the pleasure of having Meredith on one of my recent podcast episodes. She talks more about these really fascinating subjects. You should definitely check it out if you haven’t had the chance yet!
